Nepal's Smart Driving License
A smart driving license is the modern version of Nepal's "Sawari Chalak Anumatipatra", issued by the Department of Transport Management (DOTM).
Instead of a paper booklet, it is a secure smart card containing your identity, photo, license classes, and a QR code for fast digital verification. It serves the same legal purpose as the traditional license but is more durable, easier to verify, and harder to counterfeit.

From application to a printed card
The smart card is issued after you apply online and complete the in-person steps at your transport office.

Apply online
Fill in the online application on the Department of Transport Management portal and pick your nearest transport office and appointment date.

Biometric day
Visit the office on your scheduled date with your original citizenship certificate to record fingerprints, photo and signature.

Medical & trial
Clear the short eye and colour-vision test, then pass the written and practical trial for your chosen category.

Smart card printed
Once fees are paid and the trial is passed, your smart card is produced at the secure printing centre and issued to you.

Valid for years, easy to renew
A Nepali driving license is generally valid for about five years. When it nears expiry you renew it rather than starting the whole process again, and your existing categories carry over to the reissued card.
Always check the validity date printed on your own card, and renew before it lapses to avoid driving on an expired license.
